This is the big one! It takes a lot of time, patience and, above all, skill, but the payoff from SEO can be huge. As long as you’re using an experienced company like Gimme Systems , the ROI from SEO should be quite substantial in the long run.

So what is SEO ?

SEO consists of several different methods of manipulating your site’s content, metadata, etc. to get the highest possible ranking in what the industry calls (buzzword alert!)  'organic search results'.

The Search Engines (Google , Yahoo , Bing , etc) know how important they are – a first page ranking can all but guarantee a large influx of traffic to your site – and they know everybody is trying to be ranked number one. So, they’re regularly tweaking the parameters they use to analyze websites. This means the companies that do SEO well (like Gimme Systems !) have to keep up with the latest changes in Search Engine technology so they can adapt their strategies quickly and efficiently.

Since ‘the last century,’ SEO has become much more than just putting a bunch of keywords on your site.  In fact, doing that can actually hurt your business because the Search Engines penalize any site it perceives as trying to manipulate its results through gratuitous use of keywords.

Another thing to keep in mind is the fact that Search engines sell customized Pay-Per-Click (PPC) ads next to relevant organic search results that return the right kind of information in response to a user’s search parameters. Simply put, the Search Engines make money on their accuracy.

Be Spider Friendly

Spiders are the programs the search engines use to automatically visit and categorize all the pages of your Web site. Remember when the only sites that showed up at the top of the search engines were heavy on text and not visually appealing or easy-to-use? This happened because Web developers had to use an excess of code to make the pages for pretty for humans, which made it hard for Google to read the best looking pages. Enter CSS. Now we can build sites which look attractive and easy-to-use for humans, but still look like easy-to-spider text to Google. Beware: The search engines frown on any attempt to show one message to humans and another to spiders and will drop your rankings accordingly.

Linking

Search Engines respond positively when other businesses or information sites relevant to your industry link to your site.  It implies a degree of ‘respect’ from the “web community” which will also help your rankings.  However, the Search Engines go to a lot of trouble to detect “link farms” that try to manipulate results – so don’t fake it.
